On January 10, 2004 I was diagnosed with a supposedly “incurable” dis-ease called Multiple Sclerosis (M.S.). The variation of Multiple Sclerosis in which I was diagnosed with is called Relapse-Remitting in which there seem to be periods of exacerbation and remission. I have come a very long way in dealing with the various challenges of this neurological disorder.

All the physicians of traditional western medicine that I’ve encountered so far have encouraged me to take a variety of pharmaceuticals ranging from interferon drugs to chemotherapy, all of which have severe and sometimes even lethal side effects. They all seem to think that I possess a dangerous and rapidly progressive form of Multiple Sclerosis and have insisted I take actions that are just as assertive to slow its progression. Of course the potential side effects of all these drugs, many of which must be taken by way of needle injection, have always sparked a resistance within me to comply.

Unfortunately, in response to my obvious hesitation I’ve had neurologists attempt to scare me into compliance. They have scripted the possibility of me suffering an extreme physically handicapped future if I did not take the various drugs they were trying to push. I was informed that without taking the pharmaceuticals within just a couple of years I could expect possible “paralysis from the waist down” or maybe even death.

It has been very difficult to maintain a positive outlook while having so many medical experts, specialized in treating this particular auto-immune neurological disorder, give me such doomsday predictions. Even still, I made the choice to do my best in choosing love, faith and fearlessness to pull me through by using alternative, holistic, and natural treatments and therapies. Undoubtedly, I still strive daily for total, complete, and permanent remission and an absolute healing from all dis-ease.

Even still, much of my work in self-healing has proven to be very effective. My physicians continue to express amazement at the state of health I seem to be experiencing despite the resulting information that their medical tests have shown. Recently, one of my neurologists stated that given the results from my last MRI it is a wonder to him that I am even walking at all. He went on to express that he just feels that in my youthful age of almost 38 years, my body evidently must simply be quite resilient. Although I continued to intently listen to his medical report and opinion in silence, in my mind and with a joyful heart I exclaimed praises and gratitude to The Most High for it all…!

When going through very challenging times I have learned to do my best to nurture the sometimes extremely small seeds of faith that I have with prayer and meditation. I also do my best to place an extremely passionate focus upon helping others to heal themselves. Amazingly, I have found that helping others provides valuable information, useful resources, necessary encouragement, and positive energy which seem to benefit me and my situation immensely as well.

Blissfully, experience has taught me that my abilities to spiritually counsel others are actually quite adept. Many friends and associates have graciously testified to the positive effect my spiritual counsel, combined with my insight as a psychic medium, and the work I do as a holistic healer has had in helping them facilitate their own natural and innate ability within to heal themselves, their relationships, and their lives.

11:11:11 is a most unusual and mystical date for many reasons.
Here are three I would like to share with you . . .

11:11:11 is opening a portal to the dynamic energies of 2012.

What you focus upon and experience at this time will initiate a process, setting you upon a path, that will align you with your Soul’s intention for being alive at this amazing time on the Planet.

Please note that this portal will be opened and stay open, into 2012, from now forward, and particularly each day at 11:11. Spending even a few moments at those times (as you are able to) will continue to open you to and strengthen your connection to this energy. You can use the Yin Approach at 11:11 p.m. and the Yang Approach at 11:11 a.m.

In essence, as you attune to this portal, you will be setting yourself on the path towards the higher expressions of energies that will be available next year, in 2012.

Secondly, 11:11:11 is a a set of triple master numbers. Eleven is a number of illumination and when vibrating this powerfully 11 can reveal to you the path and direction you are now ready to take in your life. This can be a most illuminating experience, as this is the path that is indeed exactly right for you at this time (and into 2012) and has been laid out for you long ago. Yet it is now, as we enter this most important phase of humanity’s awakening, that you are ready to do what it is you intended this lifetime (or to take to another level what you are doing now) that will fulfill the agreement you made with your Soul (we do make agreements with our own Soul.)

Neptune has a major influence now and in fact resonates with the number eleven. When we call Neptune forth, which indeed we can do, we are better able to reside and be with these subtle, yet powerful energies present now as Neptune can help to align us with them.

Lastly, eleven represents the World of Spirit and the World of Matter, and more specifically the constant exchange of energy that exists between these worlds and is symbolically represented in the space between the “1’s” of the number eleven. This is normally quite difficult to perceive… something like trying to watch your eyes move in a mirror or seeing what is in the blind spot of your rear view mirror. It is usually outside our normal perception.

Many images may come to mind as you attuned to this space between the worlds. Here are some of them: Birthing; doorways; pathways; having a vertical stance with our feet the on the Earth and hands reaching for the sky; connecting Heaven and Earth; being a witness to the creative forces that seek expression in your life.

Some ideas as to how to be with the energies present on 11:11:11:
(and beyond—see above)

·         If you do not know you destiny or path, call it forth at this time.

·         Say an invocation declaring that you are ready to know your purpose as it can only express through you. This may set in motion a difficult yet exciting time…one you were made for.

·         Call forth new potential to come through you and for new opportunities to present themselves in your life.

·         Declare “I am ready”.

·         Allow preconceived notions of how you thought it would look or be fall away once you have invoked these things, and especially between now and 2012.

·         We are in the 45 days before the Winter Solstice (Summer in the Southern hemisphere). This is the time to go deep within so you can retrieve all that is planted within you for your coming journey ahead. Think of it as a gathering of your resources and an opening to your innate knowing of what it is you are here to do at this time.

It may seem that things are chaotic and yet this is just as it should be as much is happening within you now. You have consented to being a vehicle for the exchange of Spirit and Matter, and this will set many things in dynamic motion as new life is emerging within you.

The Yin and the Yang Approach… 

Surrender to the process… 

Engage the energies.

At this time, on 11:11:11, there is a portal open that will allow you to enter this sacred place where you can have a foothold in both worlds. This will allow you to become a more conscious part of the exchange of energy that takes place (all the time) between Spirit and Matter. It occurs to me that there are two ways we can experience this, which I am calling the “Yin” and the “Yang” Approach.

The Yin Approach is where you surrender to the energies present and are receptive and become a witness to this exchange. This can be a most mystical experience as you may sense or feel the energies actually move around, and perhaps even through, you. As you breathe in, hold your breath just a moment and surrender to the intake of the breath you just took, allowing the life force to penetrate and engulf you.

Second, with the Yang Approach, you are more dynamically involved, seeking to invite in and even direct the energies in some way. Here you are a co-creator with the energies present as they move between the Worlds of Spirit and Matter. As you breathe out, and before you inhale, state that you are a co-creator with the energies that are entering you upon your intake of air. Affirm that you are a vehicle for the fundamental creative power of the Universe.

Both are completely valid ways to engage with this portal where Spirit and Matter meet, and that are being held open in sacred and mysterious ways at this time. Having either the Yin or the Yang exchange of energies with the co-mingling of Spirit and Matter, even if it only lasts seconds, could change you forever, as you now have, planted in your consciousness and your body, an experience of what it is to co-exist in and with the higher dimensions.

We have all heard the familiar phrase: “If Life gives you lemons – make lemonade!” The power of positive thinking has long been a highly prized policy for many successful people. If you want success in life then the time is NOW to take that notion of thinking positively more seriously – don’t you think? 

Examine your life and look back.
More than likely you will begin to piece it all together just to realize that everything you did –whether the outcome was perceived as being ‘good’ or ‘bad’– began with a particular frame of mind and train of thought. The thought pattern you held yesterday was the input of positive or negative energy that created what is today now real in your life. And it’s that simple. Thoughts become things. So change your thinking and change your reality.

First, be absolutely honest with yourself.
Take note of everything: from your body’s weight on that scale to the amount of money you’ve got in your pocket; from the kind of social interaction you experience with friends and family to the type of relationship you have with your significant other; from the employment situation you’ve accepted to invest your time in every day to the place you lay your head down to rest and call home. If you find that there is anything –and I mean anything– in your life that does not spark for you a serious feeling of complete satisfaction and peace deeply on the inside of your very being – and IF you truly want to change yourself and/or your life situation so that it does – at some point you must take note and be totally accountable for what your mind has created.

Truth is: You somehow have to start getting your mind
to work for you rather than against you.

So, no doubt, the next question you may ask is: “How do I do that? How do I change my way of thinking?” Answer: You must believe… –no!– You’ve got to KNOW that “a positive mental attitude supported by affirmations will achieve success in anything." An affirmation is a positive statement or declaration, often without support or reason that something exists or is true. Next, you may wonder: How do I do this ‘Affirmation Thing’ then? -Right? Okay, I’ll break it down for you even further.

Real Talk: You have to hypnotize yourself.
It works and it’s not even hard to do.
Repeating the same words over and over again has a major impact on your brain. Repetitive words can literally program not only a habitual way of thinking or be-ing but a habitual way of DO-ING as well. You are what you Think so – get your mind right! Build a Better NOW. Begin to repeat affirmations or positive words and phrases on a regular daily basis and you will notice how your life will gradually take a turn for the better.

Names are important because they symbolize who we are, and are an expression of our identity. In the case of Nashville-based emcee, singer, poet, and spiritualist IAYAALIS, understanding her name is critical to understanding who she is, what she is about, and why she does what she does.

It’s been said that nothing sounds as sweet to any person as the sound of her own name.
Names are important because they symbolize who we are. They offer an expression of our identity. The sound of a name sends a vibration that resonates within, calling us to attention. Traditionally, the meaning of the name implies the character and attributes of the individual, something to live up to. In the case of Nashville-based emcee, singer, poet, and spiritualist IAYAALIS, understanding her name is critical to understanding who she is, what she is about, and why she does what she does. “The name IAYAALIS is an acronym that stands for I Am You Are And Love IS,” she says. “Basically it’s a formula by which I live.”

Born Donalda Antonia Chandler, IAYAALIS has earned recognition (i.e. “made a name for herself”) as one of the most talented and versatile artists on the Nashville music scene. She’ll release her debut album I Am You Are And Love IS…! in March 2011. “I’ve done a lot of research into metaphysics and different belief systems… all types of cultures and religions,” she told the Nashville Scene. “The one thing that they all hold as true, the one thing I saw in all of them is, ‘I am, you are, and love is,’ with love being the all-being, whether you call that God or Goddess or father or spirit or Allah or whatever.”  The first single from I Am You Are And Love IS…! fittingly is “the name”. “The song ‘the name’ is an expression of all the various things that comprise my world. Betty Turney-Turner's fascination with stained glass dates back to when she was a little girl attending church. She admits that plenty of times she paid more attention to the stained glass windows than to the message being delivered.


"I loved the way the sun would make the colors land on the pews," she says. "It was alive. There was movement in it."


Today Turney-Turner is one of a small handful of artists in the United States who depict African-American experiences in stained glass. Her images range from soulful jazz bassists to African women balancing baskets of fruit on their heads.


Her work, along with 11 other local artists, will be on display Saturday at the Ha Factory Gallery & Lounge downtown as part of the inaugural Rebirth of Black artist showcase. The event, which will coincide with the First Saturday Art Crawl, is being organized by the Nashville Black Artists Renaissance 12, a cooperative that aims to showcase the talents of area African-American artists.


Jeff Obafemi Carr, a commissioner with the Metropolitan Nashville Arts Commission, says it's difficult to find large collections of African-American art in Nashville, and he says he hopes this show will help fill that void.


"To my knowledge, there hasn't been a coming-together of this level in a couple of decades," says Carr, who isn't involved with the show. "There is a whole lot of talent here. It's operated off of the radar of the mainstream. I've seen some of the artists' work, and it will make you angry if you don't have money to buy it."


The artist showcase will feature 36 pieces, in mediums ranging from watercolor, oil, acrylic and airbrush painting to stained glass and photography.


Among the works will be pieces by James Threalkill, an artist who works primarily in oils and acrylics. Threalkill has won an Emmy for a mural that he produced with children from the Edgehill public housing community for Viacom cable network. He illustrated a children's book series called Visions: African-American Experiences that was featured on Sesame Street. And his painting Gulf Coast Sunset was seen in the Disney movie Snow Dogs.


While much of the artwork reflects African-American experiences, Threalkill says the show will appeal to everyone.


"African-American art is undergoing a rebirth," Threalkill says. "It's starting to be collected by a very diverse group across the country. More and more people are seeing the beauty in the work that we're creating. And I think parents are really trying to expose their children to the reality of the multicultural world that we live in."


Artwork in the show ranges in price from $150 to several thousand dollars. Twenty-five percent of sales will go to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee, an organization that links children in need with adult mentors.


 Nashville's 'hidden treasures'


Nashville has a rich history of African-American artists.


Aaron Douglas — known as the father of African-American art and a major player in the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s — founded Fisk University's fine arts department and taught there for nearly 30 years. Several of his murals can be seen in Cravath Hall on Fisk's campus.


Folk artist William Edmondson was the first African-American artist to be featured in a solo show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1937. Some of the Nashville native's sculptures can be seen at the Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art.


Turney-Turner says she hopes the show will make people realize that rich history is still alive and well in the city.


"People should come out and see the hidden treasures that Nashville has had walking among them all the time," she says. "There are quite a few really talented artists that really don't have an outlet and aren't well-known." She says she hopes the show will provide an outlet for those artists.


And this is just the beginning. The cooperative plans to host similar artist showcases every quarter, with the eventual goal of monthly exhibitions. "The ultimate goal would be to have a permanent place to display," Turney-Turner says. "A place to nurture young artists and grow the art community."

Would this liberal rag run an article about "The Rebirth of White", which showcased local European-American artists? I think we all know the answer to that. When will the hypocrisy and double standards end? Why isn't it racist to harp about "Black"? We all know if this was reversed it would be considered racist. Why the difference?

Carlton....you are correct to a point. Also ask the question why "black" artist are not included in art shows showcasing european-americans. Oddly no one questions Chinese, Italian, British, Korean, Mexican or any other nationality when it comes to labeling an art form, dining experience or even race!

I have to agree with Carlton. I live in a neighborhood where I am the minority and in eight years I have lived here, have never been invited to join any artists groups since I am white. I am a teacher in the public school and teach at a title one school and have taught here in Nashville for over ten years. This is a double standard. I do back alley work and trash pick up and have done a few murals for free. I applaud these artists but don't think the quality of the product is specific to race. I think we need to appreciate and learn from each other. I am glad that my teacher friends that are white and black don't mind teaching whatever child that arrives. I moved here thinking it would be an open minded community and that I might have something to offer. I have taught free art lessons the entire time I have lived here. I have my own non profit group called, ArtsAlive and base the most of my approach to services through the concept of sharing. I have met wonderful people here where I live and I love my students and appreciate their gifts and talents.
The issue with blacks that I do applaud is that they are not in the back ground waiting to be welcomed into the arts of all sorts. They have proven themselves, and have much to be proud of and offer to the community. Their claim to fame is not the exclusion of the rest of our citys population.

I too can relate to the eye pleasing & thought stimulating effect of stained glass art. Life seems to be infused into it when the sun radiates through. What a talent to be blessed by our Creator with what enables a person , (being made in God's image as we all are), to illustrate life's moments so vivdly w/materials such as colored glass, solder and such.I very much enjoyed Claudia Pinto's descriptive and engaging article up to the point where her focus became , (and unfortunately remained), aimed towards a person's skin color ie. "Nashville Black Artists 12", African American Art, African American experiences, etc... It is commendable the Big Brother and Big Sister organizations should benefit from contributions made by those who create with their talents and gifts.
I would submit however, on behalf of our talented artists of all race and heritage backgrounds that each artist would have their efforts appraised, valued, or simply appreciated, based soley on the merit of the art alone, be it stained glass, music, writtings...
It is most dissapointing to regard the art work refferenced by Ms. Pinto in the context of the color of the artist's skin,as she does a great injustice to the artists themselve's,as well as perpetuating an unflattering and distracting observation of the art mentioned in her article as if race or skin color has anything to do with the worth or appreciation of the artist's creative ability.
I dare to extend myself further on behalf of these talented individuals (and of all races and heritage), by simply saying they want their art, their works of creative and self expression, to be valued for what IT is, not what THEY are.
If an outlet is going to be provided (as Ms. Pinto states in her article), that outlet should exclude NO artist, (especially an exclusion based on skin color or heritage) for ALL talented artists who aren't "well known".

One thing this article didn't point out very well is that this event was part of a larger Art Crawl held every Saturday. There are at least half a dozen art galleries along this stretch of 5th Ave North and many kinds of mediums and artists are displayed in the various buildings. This particular gallery was featuring African-American artists, but there were many others in the other locations. On a side note, as a Big Sister, I'd like to thank them for contributing some of the proceeds to our program. It would be great if the entire Art Crawl would consider supporting a charity each month!
